LAU Sze-wai is a Hong Kong independent Filmmaker and Film Editor currently based in Melbourne, Australia (Narrm). His technical foundation in post-production and digital remastering was established at MBS Studios (HK), Out of The Blue (1984), The Magnificent Swordsman (1968), My Favourite Season (1985), Gong Master (1982), The Iron Buddha (1970), where he developed to complement his creative vision. Sze-wai is highly regarded for his editorial work on the documentary Lout Course (2019), which earned Best Documentary, Golden Horse Awards 2020 and earned him a nomination for Best Film Editing ith Jill Li, Luke To at the 2022 Faro Island Film Festival that was showcased at prestigious festivals, including the Vancouver International Film Festival 2019 and the 16th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and Taiwan International Documentary Festival, TIDF 2020.
Complementing his cinematic work, Sze-wai’s photography is deeply inspired by traditional darkroom practices, showcasing an aesthetic of light and shadow that balances raw authenticity with conceptual, nonlinear narratives. His documentary and street photography focus on the interplay of time and space, frequently capturing the humanity of childhood through children in public spheres and finding profound meaning in moments of silence and change philosophy. Whether through the lens of a camera or the structure of film editing. Sze-wai consistently bridges the medium between technical execution and evocative storytelling. His diverse portfolio encompasses roles as a producer, director and screenwriter across independent films, commercial advertisements, music video and theatre video design.
